Child passenger safety program carried out in MARii, enhancing awareness of child safety on the road
Child Passenger Safety Malaysia (CPSM) in collaboration with SafetyBeltSafe, USA conducted a child passenger safety program in Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute’s (MARii) headquarters, Cyberjaya.
MARii and CPSM has been in collaboration for the past one year with the main objective of spreading awareness on the usage of child seats in Malaysia, in-line with MARii’s SafeCar vehicle safety campaign.
The safety awareness program, which was divided into two sessions, is primarily aimed to enhance the awareness on the usage of child passenger seats in Malaysia with the hopes of increasing the number of child passenger safety advocates.
“The idea of this program is to get more people on the bandwagon to spread awareness because we know, the death toll for kids in Malaysia is high. We also want to increase the resources where parents can find accurate information so that they can purchase the right seats for their child”, said Jchanet Tan, Operations Director of CPSM.
The first three days of the program consisted of lectures, daily practice activities (indoor and outdoor), skills assessments (outdoor) and quizzes while the last day of each session was reserved for a Community Child Safety Seat Check Event involving parents and their children.
This approach allowed the participants to implement what they have learnt during the 3-day program by providing them an opportunity to check the conditions of safety seats brought in by the parents. Among the things checked were usage, installation and condition of the safety seats.
“These participants will be able to go into the community and share why it is so important for young children and even older children to use proper safety seats. They’ll be able to give direct service to families”, said Stephanie Tombrello, Executive Director of SafetyBeltSafe USA.
Stephanie also said that this program will be able to increase the standards and laws in Malaysia regarding the usage child seats.
One of the participants, Valerie Goh said, “It is nice to be given an opportunity to share and spread the awareness of the importance of child seats to other parents. I think it is good for all parents to ensure the safety of their child”.
A total of 25 participants (over the two sessions) attended this program.
