DROBOTEX launched, providing a platform for the Sarawak community to experience robotics and drone based technologies

Borneo International Drone and Robotics Explore (DROBOTEX) 2019 was a 3-day exhibition, workshop and competition that exposed visitors, students and the community to the world of new emerging technology in drone and robotics.

It was held from 4th to 6th October 2019 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) and was organized by the Sarawak Government through the Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS) and Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) in collaboration with other agencies.

It is an inaugural event in Sarawak that anticipate participants from school, higher institutions and the neighboring countries such as Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand with various activities related to drone, robotics and digital innovation.

The Borneo International DROBOTEX 2019 was officially launched on 4th October 2019 by The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Chief Minister of Sarawak.

When contacted directly, Awangku Merali Pg Mohamed, COO of Tegas (Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak) said, “We’re going to that direction. This DROBOTEX is a benchmark for the future probably better and clearer pathway towards IoT and Robotics.”

 

He also added that Tegas would be able to better gauge interest and performance post-event.  Additional fine tuning will be done based on feedback from Tegas’ partners to commit to further outreach efforts to the vast number communities dealing with technology. This will ensure Sarawak remains technology-competitive with the rest of the region.

 

The Objectives of Borneo International DROBOTEX 2019 are to:

  • Develop new pool of talent in Digital Skills
  • Enhance student experiential learning outside the classroom
  • Bridge the gap between new technologies and future possibilities
  • Promoting Sarawak as a key player in Digital Innovation in Borneo

 

This Borneo International DROBOTEX 2019 will be divided into three significant programs, exhibitions, talks and workshops as well as competitions.

The event brought a total of 15 partners and exhibitors from three main focused industries namely Drone, Robotics and Digital Innovation Industries.  Among the partners and exhibitors are UiTM Sarawak, PPKS/ICATS, Unit Drone Angkatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia (APM), Kinabalu Ideas Exchange, UAS and Robotics Academy, HDU Drone Academy Malaysia, Digital Economy Hub, The Learning Curve (TLC), Aerodyne Kenyalang, RERO/Vincenzo Labs and may more related institutions.

Apart from the exhibits, there were also various talks and workshops held, such as the Introduction to Drone Operation, Ariel Drone safety and Laws in Malaysia, Drone Pilot Careers, Exploring the Internet of Things (IoT), Autonomous Drone Programming, Scratch Programming for mBot, Hackathon and a coding-based game – Battle of Bots.

Other than that, there were five main competitions in the event besides the Junior Innovate Challenge (JIC) namely, Line Follower Race, Maze Solver Challenge, Drone Obstacle Race, Drone Delivery Service and Tiny Whoop Drone Race that involved 200 individual and teams in total.
