Future Mobility Displays That Caught Our Eye At The Geneva Motor Show 2018


The 2018 edition of the Geneva Motor Show 2018 continued its tradition of showcasing future vehicle concepts, and latest production models on offer to the European markets.

As mobility is expected to undergo a major shift in the future, here are some notable future mobility displays at this year’s show.


Rinspeed Snap

Swiss based design house, Rinspeed displayed a concept based on a car sharing future. What’s interesting is that the concept is not the usual space reimagined in an autonomous, battery operated vehicle.

First displayed at the CES2018 in January, it’s a two-piece design, consisting of a drive unit, called the Snap, which is the standard platform that drives the concept – consisting of the battery unit, motor and wheels. The upper unit can be detached and reconfigured to any utility – a passenger unit or logistics unit.

When the vehicle reaches its destination, the upper unit detaches from the Snap, and the Snap drives away. When it’s time to leave, the upper (or another roaming unit) is simply reattached back to the Snap.

Renault EzGO

This Level 4 autonomous vehicle concept looks at mobility as a service where, according to Renault Mobility Services, believes that there is a market for robot taxis in a future which is electric, connected and autonomous.

The EZ-GO concept is aimed mainly in populated urban cities. Users will book through a mobile app or physical station, and can be used by individuals, groups or perhaps shared with users travelling in a similar route.

PAL-V Liberty

The PAL-V is the world’s first flying production car, made by Dutch based PAL-V International BV. The company explains that the vehicle took 10 years to reach commercialisation, and is available for booking – although you’ll need to wait up to the year 2020 for now as the company produces around 70 units a year.

Made from lightweight materials such as carbon fibre and carbon titanium, the driveable car extends its folder rotor blades to allow flight. The PAL-V seats two people, and can go up to a maximum flying speed of 180 kilometers per hour.

“A production model is the last stage in the R&D process before starting full production and delivery. All certifications required for commercialization will be granted on the basis of this production model”, explains Robert Dingemanse, PAL-V’s chief executive officer.

“Once full certification is granted in 2019 we will hand over the keys of the PAL-V Liberty to our first customers”, he added.

Goodyear Oxygene

Inspired by the principles of the circular economy, this display from Goodyear – called Oxygene – is a new vision in tyre design that is cleaner, more convenient, safer and more sustainable.

The concept has a structure that allows living moss to grow within its sidewall. The tyre material is made from 3D printed rubber compound, and its tread design allows water and moisture to circulate from the road surface to allow the moss to conduct its photosynthesis cycle and release oxygen back into the atmosphere.

“With more than two-thirds of the world population expected to live in cities by 2050, the demands on transport networks in urban environments will increase substantially,” said Chris Delaney, President of Goodyear Europe, Middle East and Africa.

“Smarter, greener infrastructure and transport will be crucial in addressing the most pressing challenges of urban mobility and development.”

Italdesign and Airbus premiered the first modular, fully electric, zero emission concept vehicle system designed to relieve traffic congestion in crowded megacities. Pop.Up envisages a modular system for multi-modal transportation that makes full use of both ground and airspace.

The concept is their imagination in addressing mobility challenges of increasing traffic congestion in the future, through a sustainable, modular, multimodal mobility system.

Pop.Up System consists of a three layers concept – first, an Artificial Intelligence platform that, based on its user knowledge, manages the travel complexity offering alternative usage scenarios and assuring a seamless travel experience.

Next, a vehicle shaped as a passenger capsule designed to be coupled with two different and independent electric propelled modules (the ground module and the air module). Other public means of transportation (e.g. trains or hyperloops) could also integrate the Pop.Up capsule;

Third, an interface module that dialogues with users in a fully virtual environment.
