The Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) has signed a joint research collaboration with the University of South Australia (UniSA) to undertake research in the areas of Big Data Analytics (BDA), Internet of Things (IoT), Satellite Cube applications and others, for a period of 5 years until 2024.

The agreement was signed between Azhar Taib, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of MARii, and Professor David Lloyd, Vice Chancellor and President of UniSA at the UniSA Campus in City West, Adelaide. The signing was witnessed by  Datuk Darell Leiking, Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Malaysia, and the Honourable Senator Simon Birmingham, the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Australia.

This collaboration is an extension of the MARii-UniSA Automotive Innovation Centre (AIC) established in 2017. One of the main research projects under this centre is the development of lightweight plastic replacement of glass as well as heat & infrared reflecting coatings. MARii’s first engagement with UniSA started in 2013 under the Automotive Australia 2020 Cooperative Research Centre (AutoCRC) which was a project under the Economic and Technical Cooperation Chapter under the Malaysia-Australia Free Trade Agreement (MAFTA).

The lightweight plastic replacement of glass and the heat & infrared reflective coatings have potential applications in reducing the overall weight of vehicles and will undergo commercialisation with a potential value of RM250 million in the first 2 years.

“With the rebranding of the Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) to MARii earlier this year, we explored to enhance our collaboration with UniSA through extending our areas of research to include Industry 4.0, Big Data, IoT and most recently Satellite Cube Applications, which is a new proponent that UniSA is championing. The signing today signifies this extended collaboration and the way forward for MARii”, said Azhar.

The signing of this agreement is held in conjunction with the Trade and Investment Mission to Australia from 19-24 August 2019 led by Datuk Darell Leiking. The mission comprises officials from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), MARii, Malaysian Investment Development Authority, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), InvestKL Corporation and EXIM Bank.
