The 51st ASEAN Day & Business Forum “Unlocking The Potentials Of ASEAN E-Commerce”


The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) organised the 51st ASEAN Day, in conjunction with the 51st Anniversary of ASEAN on 8th August 2018 at MITI Tower, Kuala Lumpur.

The ASEAN day was held to create awareness on the opportunities arising from the implementation of the ASEAN eCommerce Agreement, which is scheduled to be signed at the ASEAN Summit in November 2018. The event updates stakeholders on the extensive work undertaken to drive the e-Commerce agenda, both in Malaysia and the ASEAN region.

A key feature of the Forum was the panel discussion with successful e-Commerce entrepreneurs and prominent players in e-Commerce ecosystem. The forum was paneled by Ms. Soh Yien Yee, Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Avana, Dato’ Chew Chee Seng, Group Managing Director of ManagePay Marketing Sdn. Bhd., Mr. Ng Chet Chiang, CEO of Logistics Worldwide Express (M) Sdn. Bhd. and Dr. Rayner Alfred, UMS. The forum was moderated by Ms. Melisa Idris, Presenter and Executive Producer of The Morning Run show at BFM89.9 – The Business Station.

“The aim of the Business Forum is to promote greater awareness of e-Commerce marketplaces and to inspire Malaysian business to explore business opportunities in ASEAN via experience sharing of successful entrepreneurs,” said Y.B Ignatius Darell Leiking, Minister of MITI.

He added, “For Malaysia, the digital economy currently contributes 18.2% to Malaysia’s GDP, with the potential to rise to 20% of GDP by 2020. The Malaysian government through MITI, SME Corp., Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and other government agencies as well as the private sector are stepping up efforts to get Malaysian companies, especially the SMEs to move towards adopting digitalization. Advances in information technology have become the significant enabler for companies to tap on new ways of doing business”.

The growing popularity of e-Commerce in Malaysia provides new opportunities for greater market access for SMEs, including the automotive industry. According to a recent report, there were 15.1 million active users in Malaysia, or 47.9 per cent of the Malaysian population. This number is expected to rise with the increasing speed and affordability of internet and broadband plans each year.

The Business Forum was attended by approximately 500 Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), exporters, industry representatives and e-Commerce players. Also present during the ASEAN Day were, Y.B Dr. Ong Kian Ming, Deputy Minister of MITI, Y. BHG. Datin K. Talagavathi, Deputy Secretary General (Industry) of MITI, Y. BHG. Datuk Norazman Ayob, Deputy Secretary General (Trade) of MITI, and representatives from embassies of the ASEAN region.
